Respiratory viruses remain elevated — local data beats national headlines

CDC respiratory virus surveillance (flu, COVID-19, RSV) continues to show regionally elevated activity across much of the U.S. this winter. The key clinical takeaway isn’t national averages...it’s what’s circulating in your ZIP code.

Why it matters to clinicians

  • Testing strategy should reflect current local positivity, not last month’s trends.
  • Multiplex panels make sense in high-risk or hospitalized patients; targeted testing often suffices in low-risk outpatient settings.

Clinical takeaway Use local ED-visit and positivity data to guide who gets tested, what gets tested, and when empiric treatment is reasonable. Smart utilization protects patients and lab capacity.

RSV vaccination guidance for adults is now clearer

CDC guidance confirms:

  • One-time RSV vaccination for all adults ≥75
  • Adults 50–74 with increased risk (cardiopulmonary disease, diabetes, immunocompromise, frailty, etc.)
  • RSV vaccination is not annual at this time

Why it matters to clinicians RSV is no longer a “pediatric-only” concern. Older adults and patients with chronic disease are seeing significant morbidity and hospitalizations—most of which are preventable.

Clinical takeaway Incorporate RSV vaccination discussions into winter chronic-care and preventive visits, especially when patients are already being seen for flu or COVID counseling.

FDA removes suicidality warning language from GLP-1 medications

In January 2026, FDA announced it did not find evidence of increased suicidal ideation or behavior associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists and requested removal of that warning from labeling where present.

Why it matters to clinicians GLP-1 therapies are now mainstream in diabetes, obesity, and cardiometabolic care. Outdated warning language can drive unnecessary patient anxiety or premature discontinuation.

Clinical takeaway Continue appropriate mental-health screening as part of good medicine but confidently reassure patients using the current evidence base, not last year’s headlines.

Industry Events to Watch (February–July 2026)

February–March 2026

  • Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference (CLEC) — February (U.S.)
  • SLAS International Conference & Exhibition — February (Boston, MA)
  • ACLA Annual Meeting — February (Washington, DC)
  • Regional and state pathology & laboratory association meetings (many held Feb–Mar)

July 2026

  • ADLM Clinical & Lab Expo (formerly AACC) July 26–30, 2026 | Chicago, IL The premier global meeting for clinical diagnostics, laboratory medicine, and emerging technologies.

Quick Thought

When respiratory demand is high, preventive care is evolving, and reimbursement pressure is real, clinicians rely on labs that are fast, consistent, and operationally stable. Programs that support labs without disrupting patient testing including compliant remnant workflows—help protect capacity during peak season while enabling future research and innovation.
